Carbon Neutrality: Inside ALBA and PALO IT’s Green Innovations

Earlier this year, our team had the opportunity to collaborate on another project with Invest Hong Kong. The shoot that took place in April featured ALBA and PALO IT, offering an inside look at two companies making significant strides in sustainability. Each company brought unique approaches to addressing carbon emissions, and the production process provided valuable insights into their work.

ALBA

For the ALBA segment, we travelled to their Hong Kong base in Tuen Mun, home to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling facility. Our production team captured the detailed process of dismantling and recycling various electronics—laptops, TVs, microwaves, and even washing machines. The scenes, guided by Asia Director Kenny Wong and his team, highlighted ALBA’s critical role in reducing the city's carbon emissions.

A particularly engaging part of the shoot involved filming the children of ALBA employees interacting with the Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) scheme. We felt as if this scene was particularly important because teaching children how to recycle instils habits that are crucial for tackling the long-term effects of climate change. The next generation will play a key role in shaping a sustainable future, making this initiative, implemented by the Environmental Protection Department, all the more significant. The RVM segment required coordination between our crew, equipment, and the young participants to ensure we captured the essence of sustainability in action. The experience at the WEEE facility was both challenging and enlightening, as we documented how ALBA transforms potential waste into valuable resources. And, if directing kids is no easy task, we sure had fun doing it.

PALO IT

Our second feature, also filmed that day, focused on PALO IT, a global innovation consultancy and software development firm. Hong Kong Managing Director Fabrice Bayon and his team have worked tirelessly to make their branch one of the few PALO IT offices to earn the prestigious B-Corp certification, reflecting PALO IT’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility. To illustrate PALO IT’s dedication to Tech for Good, our production team worked closely with Fabrice to capture a slice of his daily routine.

This included shooting in a Run and Gun style at a local market near the PALO IT office, where Fabrice picked up fruit and vegetables for his family. The shoot attracted the attention of curious residents, adding an authentic touch to the scene. Along the way, Fabrice collected plastic waste, disposing of bottles in an RVM—a sequence that required several takes to get just right. We also filmed in various iconic locations, from the Monster Building in Quarry Bay to tram rides through the city.  These scenes required meticulous planning and coordination, but The Hong Kong Fixer’s guerrilla shooting tactics—honed over 15 years on the immense film set that is Hong Kong—often came in handy.

Both filming experiences were memorable for The Fixer crew, offering a deeper understanding of carbon neutrality and the efforts behind reducing carbon emissions in Hong Kong. Despite the production challenges, our team rose to the occasion, successfully managing a two-story shoot in a single day.
