It's not every day you get to blend two passions into your job. That's what happened when we were offered the chance to produce and direct the performance capture of the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra's charity concert at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong. With Christmas approaching, the air hummed with festive spirit, and this project promised to be both a celebration of music and a contribution to a worthy cause: raising funds for the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra to share musical joy with a wider audience throughout the year. In a way, it felt like our first music video production!

While the budget was modest, our ambition was clear – to create a high quality performance capture that would do justice to the music and the musicians. We delved deep into the repertoire, absorbing the beauty of each piece and even attempting to crack the code of musical notation (a crash course, mind you!). It was like stepping into the mind of conductor K.K. Chiu, using the music as our guide. To faithfully translate the live experience, we brought in the best sound crew we could find and equipped them with top-notch microphones for pristine audio capture.

But it wasn't just about the technical aspects. We wanted to capture the raw emotion that pours out of musicians on stage. Nothing beats the energy of a live performance, and we were determined to bottle it up and share it with the world.

So, the biggest hurdle was figuring out how to translate our artistic vision into a technical reality. We faced a logistical symphony of challenges – tangled cables, fickle wireless connections, and ever-draining camera batteries. But our amazing team, working in perfect harmony, overcame each obstacle one by one.

Drawing on past experiences like producing UBS's Nobel winning speakers series and a feasibility study for a high-end live stream of Macau's iconic “The House on Dancing Water”, we crafted a multi-camera capture plan. High above the stage, GoPros soared on the fly system, capturing the grandeur from a bird's-eye view. In the heart of the orchestra, a 360-degree camera offered a truly immersive experience. But it was the close-ups, the focus on hands and faces, that truly captivated us. These were the windows into the souls of the musicians, where every flicker of expression told a story.

For a first-time creative and technical undertaking of this scale, accomplished on a limited budget, we're happy with the results. But beyond the end product, the memory of the concert itself remains vivid – the sheer brilliance of the musicians, the emotions that surged through us as we guided the production from the technical booth.
